Abstract | This manual provides information concerning the basic skills needed to perform the tasks of the occupation of entry-level clerk-typist. It is intended for vocational program directors and administrators, vocational counselors, vocational instructors, basic skills instructors, and curriculum developers. An introduction reviews the study to link basic skills to occupational tasks and clerk-typist training, defines terminology, describes the methodology, and suggests uses for the study. A narrative summary of the clerk-typist basic skills data and of the frequency of performance data associated with occupational tasks is contained in section 2. Section 3 is a clerk-typist occupational task list. In the final section, clerk-typists' tasks are presented by individual basic skills area: job-related reading, job-related mathematics, job-related writing, and job-related listening and speaking. Discussion of each skill area contains the following elements: related terminology, a taxonomy that takes a job-related approach to the basic skills and expresses them in performance terms, discussion of the data regarding the basic skills required for task performance, linking of tasks to specific applications of the basic skill, and a list of occupationally specific instructional materials for teaching the job-related basic skill. Appendixes include the survey form. (YLB) |
