AbstractOne of three related documents on recreational boating, this curriculum outline presents units of study designed to provide the knowledge, attitudes, and skills essential for safe boating behavior in all recreational boating activities. Fourteen units of study cover all phases of boat operation and are geared to the 15- or 16-foot power boat--the most popular size and type of boat used for recreation in the United States. In addition to course orientation and pre- and post-test sessions, the units cover natural laws affecting navigation, boating rules and regulations, navigational aids and devices, preparation of the boat for getting underway, boat operation, docking and anchoring, weather and water conditions, emergency decision making, and causes and prevention of common boating problems. Behavioral objectives are stated for each unit of study and followed by a brief description of the related learning experiences, a list of necessary materials, and assignments in the student workbook and resource manual. Though on-the-water experiences are suggested, they are an optional part of the course. The curriculum is used to train both students and course instructors and includes two instructors' units on teaching methods and program implementation. Five laboratory exercises supplement the curriculum outline, which teaches skills essential for safe boating behavior. (JH)
