AbstractInformation is presented on China's higher education system, China's current educational exchanges, and the U.S.-China educational exchange process. China's higher education system is considered in terms of historical themes and implications for the present, the number and types of institutions, graduate education, operation of the higher education system, and institutions of research and development. The approximate percentages of Chinese students and scholars presently in the United States are indicated by subject field. The history of the understanding between the two countries regarding educational exchange and formal agreements is addressed. The approximate numbers of Chinese students and scholars in Great Britain, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, and Japan are specified. The U.S.-China Educational exchange process is examined in terms of China's current exchange policies; the evaluation of Chinese academic credentials; Chinese education patterns in the secondary schools, colleges, graduate education, overseas education, and special education; the Chinese college entrance examinations; visa information and related matters; English as a second language; and opportunities for American scholars and students in China. General access to China, teaching opportunities in China, lecturing in China, and research and study programs are addressed. Appended materials include: key colleges and universities and their affiliations by specialization, key contact in the U.S. government, and bibliographies of recent works on Chinese education and science and technology.
