AbstractThis document reports a survey of employers in the Stamford Labor Market Area (Connecticut) that was undertaken during the fall of 1978. Chapter 1 outlines the survey, its findings, and these four objectives: (1) identify nature and extent of jobs and skills mismatch problems, (2) identify nature and extent of career-stagnation problems among those who occupy low-skill and low-wage positions, (3) find ways that area firms try to cope with these problems, and (4) seek opinions of area firms' experts on causes of and solutions for the problems. Chapter 2 briefly discusses the nature and causes of the job-skills mismatch problem. In chapter 3 the outlook for employment is described, including skills in shortage, skills in surplus, and types of industries to grow and decline. Chapter 4 concerns training and educational programs and focuses on inadequate basic education, local training-educational institutions, lack of incentives and career goals, and skills needed to be trained for. The final chapter (conclusions) cites some employer comments on basic education, vocational skill training, better counseling, and work incentives. Some of their suggestions/solutions to job-skills mismatch problems are also cited. The survey instrument is appended. (YLB)
