Abstract | An intellectually clear conceptual base upon which to formulate a study of teacher education is considered. To achieve this conceptual clarification, two intellectual postures are described: John Dewey's "intellectual method" and John Wilson's intellectual "way of working." Three interrelated dimensions of an intellectual posture are discussed: (1) the attitudes or characteristics of the professional; (2) the professional's assumptions about the kind and quality of understandings necessary for serious inquiry into educational problems; and (3) the methodology or procedures of the professional's intellectual method. It is concluded that the implementation of either of these two intellectual approaches depends not only on the ability to be methodologically rigorous, but also on the capacity to approach educational problems with personal artistry and style.
