Abstract | The general intent of this paper is to make a case for educational intervention programs for children age 3 or younger. Section I reviews the developmental psychological literature on the intellectual development of children age 3 and younger. Particular attention is given to the environmental situations which facilitate or retard cognitive development. Section II examines specific early intervention programs (programs in child care centers and also home-based programs) whose common aim is the facilitating of cognitive growth in very young children. The last section reviews a number of frequently used assessment and screening instruments for children from birth to 3 years of age, and examines the validity and reliability of instruments which could be used to measure the impact of educational intervention systems. Also discussed in this section are diagnostic instruments which identify children's weaknesses. (Author/MP) |
