AbstractCommunication within the foreign language profession and with the public is discussed. The responsibilities of national, regional, state, and local professional organizations in dealing with matters of articulation and standardization are discussed. Articulation means setting up common goals and ideals for foreign language learning and teaching for all languages in general and for specific languages. Articulation implies that national, regional, and local norms be set up to establish minimal competencies expected of both students and teachers. Teachers of the same language at a specific level and teachers of the same language on different levels need to communicate. Both formal and informal articulation between FLES, secondary, two-year college and four-year college personnel are needed. Articulation with foreign language personnel in adult education and with professionals in other disciplines is discussed. There is a need to keep the public appraised of the continuing and growing relevance of foreign languages to their lives and of the integrative function of language study and its role in liberal arts and preprofessional education. Possible sources of assistance outside the profession in getting the message to the public are government agencies, consulates, parents groups, and civic associations. Methods of communicating the message to the public are covered. (SW)
