| Abstract | This module introduces the physical, biological, and chemical constituents of wastewaters and sludges which are of concern in land treatment systems. The characteristics of typical municipal wastewater are tabulated for strong, medium, and weak sewages. Some of the factors affecting pollutant concentrations are listed. Flow, distribution and expected removals of various waste constituents in conventional treatment systems are illustrated through the use of flow diagrams. Since the liquid effluent or sludge from various conventional pretreatments, as well as raw wastewater, may be the influent to a land application site, this information is necessary to the design of land treatment schemes. A summary of flow distribution and pollutant removals in land treatment systems is presented in a script written to accompany a slide presentation. (Author/BB) |
