AbstractThis study investigated the quantitative and qualitative differences in the responses of children aged four, six, and eight to four kinds of questions; cognitive memory, convergent, divergent, and evaluative. The subjects, 48 boys and girls, were from advantaged homes and had attended, or were attending, nursery school. Each subject was shown a feltboard picture, was given brief information about the feltboard characters, and was asked 12 questions (3 of each type). A three-way analysis of variance was conducted according to question type, age, and sex. Data revealed a developmental trend, but no significant relationship to sex difference, in the length of responses to the questions. Question type was found to affect the length of response, with evaluative questions eliciting the longest responses. Question type, but not age and sex, was also found to affect syntactic complexity of responses. Age, however, was found to affect children's abilities to relate to questions and to justify their answers. (Author/KS)
