Abstract | Described and illustrated with charts and tables is a model program for learning disability students at the University of Vermont. The program is said to feature an interprofessional team of educational, clinical, and medical specialists. Reviewed are the five steps in the Problem Oriented System for Educational Services (P.O.S.E.): identification, tentative definition of the problem, diagnosis, classroom educational plan, and evaluation of the remediation plan. Medical aspects of learning disability diagnosis, including soft neurological signs, are analyzed, and the need for differential diagnostic testing is emphasized. Six considerations in remedial strategies, including the importance of flexible programing for learning disabled students, conclude the narrative. Appended are nine charts (including diagrams of the P.O.S.E. approach), and six tables (including a list of selected assessment measures). (CL) |
