AbstractThis developmental applied research project aims to provide an effective means of orienting non-traditional students, especially minorities and females, to engineering technology, and particularly to basic materials science. The instructional system adopted involves self-paced, individualized instruction, breaking the technical education component (TEC) into competency based modules. A prototype module on the nature and properties of plastics was developed and received extensive field testing. Feedback data from the prototype was used in developing the remaining modules in the TEC. This entire prototype TEC, consisting of multi-media programmed learning booklets, slide/tape presentations, and demonstration devices, received full implementation and evaluation in the first course of materials and processes of industry at Norfolk State College, and was used to supplement several technology courses at Thomas Nelson Community College. Results of an evaluation by a jury of 22 engineers, technicians, educators, and counselors, and of a student evaluation, are included in this report; along with a statistical study of the success of students taught by this method as compared to the success of students taught by a traditional method. A survey of the literature is included and a prototype module is appended. (Author/NHM)
