Abstract | AUTOQUEST is a computer aid to independent study. It presents ordinary text to a student at a computer terminal, a paragraph at a time. Using a pattern-matching approach, the system generates a question based on one of the sentences of the text and grades the student's answer. If the student's answer does not match the words of the text, the paragraph is displayed again. Results showed that about 68 percent of the generated questions were satisfactory and that the errors were largely syntactic, indicating the need for a structural parser to preprocess the sentences. The economic feasibility of AUTOQUEST is discussed and judged to be good within 5 years. (Author) |
