AbstractIn the fall of 1970 the LAMPS (Laboratory Approach to Mathematical Problem Solving) Program began to operate in three elementary schools. This field study deals with the procedure, problems, disappointments, and successes in developing the LAMPS Laboratories. It describes the efforts made to secure greater student involvement and achievement in mathematics, and more teacher enthusiasm and participation in the student-learning situation. An analysis was made of students' scores on the Jastak Wide Range Achievement Test in Arithmetic, which had been used both as a pre- and posttest. A locally developed questionnaire was used to sample pupil attitudes. An evaluation questionnaire was distributed to the classroom teachers who had students in the mathematics laboratories. The principals were interviewed by the coordinator of Urban Education of the Educational Research Council of America, Cleveland Office. When data from these evaluative procedures were summarized, it appeared that the LAMPS Program was contributing to the improvement of attitudes and achievement of "quite a few" mathematically-deficient students. This study also suggested many general procedures for instituting mathematics laboratories. (Author/JP)
