| Abstract | This text is designed for students of English as a second language for intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency. The text is based on an approach to writing which is semantic and cognitive. Providing for active transfer of each student's knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, it bridges the gap between controlled writing and free writing. Semantic in emphasis, this system of teaching composition focuses on writing as a means of communication. The writing practice is concerned with meaning, both in content and through relationships. The cognitive method treats writing, not as an end-product to be evaluated and graded, but as an activity, a process, which the student can learn how to accomplish. Pedagogically, it relies on active thinking, that is, on a conscious awareness of the intellectual process. It capitalizes on the students' ability to think inductively and on the cognitive skills they already have. Students are to be aware of the cognitive methods they are utilizing and be able to identify them. (Author) |
