Abstract | This book provides a discussion of rhetoric and its importance in second language learning in general, with specific remarks on problems in teaching English as a second language. Logic (not in the strictest philosophical sense), the basic rhetoric, is evolved out of a culture; it is not universal. Rhetoric is not universal either. Rhetorical frames should be taught in the second-language curriculum; they may have greater importance in developing linguistic proficiency than the isolated grammatical frames. The book discusses various philosophical and linguistic approaches to rhetoric, psychological factors in language teaching, examples of cultural differences evident in rhetoric, a rhetorical model, some logical considerations, and some pedagogical strategies.
