Abstract | An assessment was made of the overall effectiveness of a one-day inservice training workshop for 100 adult basic education (ABE) teachers in West Tennessee. The Kropp-Verner Evaluation Scale and a questionnaire were administered to participants. Of the total number of respondents, 56% were women, 67% were aged 35 or older, and 75% had less than three years of ABE teaching experience. Opinions on meeting space, relevance of program content, opportunities for participation, and personal improvement tended to be favorable. The workshop as a whole was likewise judged successful. Strong points most often mentioned were the quality of teaching, discussions on how to develop reading skills, and appropriateness of the ideas and materials presented. The lack of group discussion and sufficient time in general was the only area of weakness noted. Mathematics emerged as the leading topic of concern for future workshops. (A questionnaire, evaluation instruments, reading passages, curriculum outlines, and other appendices, are included). (LY) |
