AbstractTHE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SCORES ON THE PUMROY CONCENTRATION TEST (PCT) AND ANXIETY, READING ABILITY, AND PERCEPTUAL SPEED AND ACCURACY WERE INVESTIGATED. CERTAIN ATTITUDES AND PROBLEMS OF THOSE STUDENTS WHO SCORED HIGH AND LOW ON THE PCT WERE IDENTIFIED, AND THE RELATION BETWEEN CONCENTRATION SCORES AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND ATTITUDES TOWARD TEACHING WERE DETERMINED. SIXTY-FOUR UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND STUDENTS WERE PRETESTED ON THE TAYLOR MANIFEST ANXIETY SCALE, AND ON THE MINNESOTA TEACHER ATTITUDE INVENTORY (MTAI). THE SUBJECTS WERE EACH GIVEN THE PCT, TACHISTOSCOPICALLY PRESENTED VOCABULARY EXERCISES, A READING COMPREHENSION TEST, AND A POST-QUESTIONNAIRE. THE PCT TASK INVOLVED CONCENTRATING FOR 3 MINUTES ON EACH OF THREE TARGETS--A "T", CONCENTRIC CIRCLES, AND A BLANK. THE ZERO ORDER CORRELATIONS FOR EACH CONCENTRATION MEASURE--TOTAL FREQUENCY AND TOTAL DURATION SCORE--WERE EXAMINED. THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TOTAL FREQUENCY SCORE AND EACH OF THE FOLLOWING--THE TOTAL DURATION SCORE, THE LETTER RECOGNITION TASK, THE T-SCOPE EXERCISE--EASY WORDS SERIES, AND THE POSITIVE SCORE FOR FACTOR IV OF THE MTAI. THE BLANK TARGET WAS SIGNIFICANTLY HARDER TO CONCENTRATE ON. ANXIETY AND READING ABILITY WERE NOT RELATED TO THE CONCENTRATION MEASURES USED. THE QUESTIONNAIRES AND READING TESTS USED ARE APPENDED. A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE, TABLES, AND REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (RH)
