Abstract | The article discusses the implications that new grammatical and lexical features of Black South African English have for language assessment. It is argued that any decisions on assessment must be based on empirical evidence of the stability of such features. Tentative evidence is provided in the article. It seems as if a Standard BSAE is in development, and that language assessment will have to take this into account, although the need for language maintenance and a norm in language assessment remain essential.
