It is a widely heard argument in scholarly and societal discourses that sport fosters fair play norms and prosocial behaviors. This contradicts with the obvious fact that fairness does not seem to be the dominant line of action in elite sports. Against this background and based on qualitative interviews, the study describes the understanding of fairness among professional soccer players. The systemic conditions in the field of elite sports become visible that structure socialization processes, just as typical modes of adoption and individual ways of dealing with and reflecting on these conditions. The material shows that players differentiate between fair and unfair fouls: Fair fouls are understandable within a situational, game-based logic of success, whereas unfair fouls do not match this horizon of meaning. Most notably, the player's fair play interpretation attaches importance to interpersonal dealings within their own teams, in which they frequently witness with competitive struggles and a variety of unfair behaviors. |
