Abstract	On the basis of a definition of the terms "concept of the friend" and "concept of the enemy", this article analyzes primers and civics schoolbooks from the German Democratic Republic - against the background of domestic and external developments - with regard to their concepts of friends and enemies. In the last part of this article, a comparative glance is thrown on schoolbooks for social studies from the old Federal Republic of Germany (cf. also the article from Sylvia Schütze in this volume, pp. 299-311). The hitherto existing results corroborate the initial thesis: While concepts of friends and enemies played a decisive role in civics schoolbooks of the GDR until 1989, while these books divided the world dichotomicly into good and evil and fueled the hatred towards the enemies, the perspectives in schoolbooks from the Federal Republic were considerably more differentiated.
