Abstract | The purpose of this article is fourfold: (a) to explore the variety of primers developed for early reading instruction in European countries, (b) to argue in favour of the development of an interdisciplinary and transnational understanding of characteristics of this type of text, (c) to deliver insights into the situation of scientific research devoted to primers in Europe and (d) to discuss some challenges for future research. The introductory section presents, amongst others, the evidence base and its limits; after that, characteristics of the primer in a European context are described. The third and last part focuses on research efforts in European countries, including a consideration of potentials and desiderata. Overall, the article sheds some light on an educational text which, seen in a historical, international and interdisciplinary perspective, is anything but "simple". (DIPF/Orig.). |
