| Abstract | Examined gender as a moderator of the fair-process effect in an ultimatum game setting in 2 experiments. Experiment 1 (57 college students, mean age 19.4 years) was a 2 (prime: Asian vs White faces) x 2 (target: American vs foreign landmarks) within-participants factorial design. The procedure for Experiment 2 (65 college students, mean age 19.4 years) was identical to that of Experiment 1 with exception of the manipulated response deadline. Results from both experiments support the hypothesis that fair procedures can decrease rejection behavior in unfair human allocation decisions. Furthermore, procedural fairness results in a statistically significant difference for women in accepting an unfair distribution. In contrast, procedural fairness appears to have no significant impact on men's rejection behavior. However, no significant gender differences in the perception of procedural fairness were found. The authors conclude that, although men perceive procedural fairness similarly to women, this aspect is less important for determining their subsequent behavior. (ZPID). |
