Abstract | The four parts of this volume are all introduced by a short comment that explains the respective headings and highlights the arguments of the authors grouped in that particular chapter. The headings are: 1. Dilemmas of funding agencies: quantity versus quality Issues. 2. Research findings. 3. Country reports. 4. Project experiences. In the general conclusion of the volume, as is to be expected given the content of the papers, more questions are raised than answered. However, and this is a reason for some optimism, the experiences related in the volume make it clear that experiments in planning and construction of schools and schoolyards where the first hand actors (teachers, parents, pupils) have been involved do improve school and learning programmes.
