| Abstract | The central argument of this paper is that university access is contaminated with social inequity. Data from the 2004 University Selection Test (PSU) show that applicants that took the test were mostly women, under 20 years of age, single, non-working, living under parental dependency. The system leaves out the population that is made up of adult workers, married, heads of households, because the university admission system is not designed for them. Apart from this inequity by design, admission to higher education in Chile is still discriminating among two groups: those who could pay for their secondary education and those who couldn't. This is related to the nature of school funding so that legislation intended to level the curricula is not a guarantee of equity. This is the reason why the design of the PSU is biased against equity in the curriculum. The author argues in favour of maintaining a selective system of university admission but the PSU test allows for improvement from the standpoint of its contents. (DIPF/Orig.). |
