Abstract | "Why do people go to college? What makes some decide to go and others not? The basic purpose of this book is to answer these questions both theoretically and empirically from the standpoint of economics. The analyses of this book can be classified into two parts: the theoretical analyses ... on the one hand, and empirical analyses ... on the other". The basic economic theories mentioned here deal with a) "college-going behavior as investment in human capital", i. e. the analysis of the rates of return and b) college-going as "signaling", i. e. "to convey information to society about the degree holder's productivity". The empirical analyses are: a) an application of the internal-rate-of-return method, b) an examination of the causes of changes in the enrollment rate, using models others than rate of return, c) individual attributes of college-going: what types of individuals tend to go to college (e. g. socio-economic factors).
