| Abstract | This paper examines the factors determining the precarious financial situation of traditional universities in Chile (25 universities in the Council of University Presidents). Operational income (fees, selling of goods and services and investment returns) is the main component of total income ... Total income increased by 114 % during the 90s, but the level of total expenditure also grew dramatically between 1990 and 1998. ... Direct fiscal contribution supposedly should bridge the gap but it has a wide variation throughout the institutions. In general, universities are increasingly getting resources from their students, either through fees or public support systems (loans and scholarships) . Real investment per student has a markedly fluctuating trend, and income from services is persistently low for the whole system. All that indicates that financial problems of traditional universities are of a structural kind. (DIPF/orig.) |
