AbstractAlthough the European Union's (EU) commitment to dual sovereignty preludes the dissemination of an officially sanctioned European myth, the EU's plan for a "European Dimension in Education" allows the EU myth to evolve through the individualistic process already accepted by the European Union's member countries. This is not myth-making in the traditional sense. This myth is proactive rather than retroactive, individualistic rather than centralized, and has social rather than physical borders. The role of the school systems of member countries has, until now, been left to the discretion of individual countries but the EU action plans now focus on multimedia opportunities for teachers, shared teaching and language learning materials and networks among teacher training institutions and among teaches themselves. These processes provide opportunity for the dissemination of information about the EU and provide an EU myth based on its relatively short history rather than on the conflicting histories of individual countries. This paper traces the transition of EU policy from a "pre-myth" focus on transnational mobility to a strategy for developing identity by bringing information about the EU to its citizens through united efforts to be carried out in the schools of the member countries.
