Abstract	The objective of this study is to provide background analysis for the employment policy reviews prepared by the Directorate General V of the European Commission regarding accession countries. This study describes the evolution that the Polish labour market underwent since 1990. Initially shock therapy was applied to reform the Polish economy. At the time factors defining the supply and demand of labour, institutions and labour market policies changed decisively. The most radical change was the introduction of market in areas such as wages and prices. Currently changes to the labour market are not as dynamic, although the transformation of the system has not yet finalised. For instance, more privatisation, the restructuring of the agriculture sector and linking active labour market policies to the situation of local labour markets.
