Abstract | This issue compiles articles dealing with the status and projection of the future of education in Europe. The European Union, the Council of Europe, and the economy influence education on la levels... Bringing European concepts into education seems to be a great challenge because it needs to include the cultural and linguistic others. The roles of schools and universities have changed considerably to accommodate or in some instances to resist equality and equity for all. The future cannot be understood without knowledge of the past. Heinz Stübig looks back to the nineteenth century and describes the influence of the Prussian Imperial German military training on the public, the school systems, and the universities. By instilling in all civil servants, especially teachers, the idea of strong discipline, absolute obedience, and loyalty to the emperor and any authority, this training is an example of the influence of outside forces on education, even though it may not be as obvious.
