| Abstract | This paper deals with problems related to the design of self evaluation processes in universities, an issue that is increasingly important in Latin America. To that end there is a need to review some peculiar features of universities. [This is done in the article: the authors discuss 7 such features derived from the fact that universities are complex organizations. Frome these, conclusions are drawn for the self evaluation process: It must:] specify the institutional mission; ensure the contribution of students; integrate information and analysis in a reasonable way; facilitate empowerment to faculty; ensure adequate participation and leadership from the top managers; and evaluate the external environment of the institution.
