Abstract | "How can one explain the fact that young women still prefer the literary or commercial disciplines and adopt attitudes of self-exclusion when it comes to mathematics and physics? Is it because the sciences require a 'masculine' intelligence? If so, women may feel this to be an undesirable characteristic for them and therefore censure their interest so as to conform to the more feminine qualities of their friends and not feel excluded or rejected." In order to analyse the gender stategies in the last year of secondary school 573 pupils (46 % girls) were interviewed. The study analyses 1) the influence of the family and socio-cultural background, 2) gendered identities and the relation to knowledge: reasons for choosing the scientific stream, reasons for choosing a type of higher education (university - Grandes Ecoles), choosing of preparation courses for Grandes Ecoles, 3) influences on the strategies for the own professional future or familiy influences.
