Abstract | There is an odd paradoxy in education, namely: that it is necessary, though partly impossible, to deal with it scientifically. The article lines out this paradoxy in two steps. The necessity of the scientific approach is given by the limited reach of experience and knowledge by experience especially as regards future, further by the demand for enlightenment and critique in as well as of educational practice. - The boundaries of the scientific approach to education are given by the historical and social conditions of education and teaching on one hand, on the other hand by the dynamic complexity and the individuality of education itself. They set a limit to its scientific research. In dealing with the said paradoxy, the article also muses on the university as the social institution of science, on the history of the pedagogical profession, and on the development of the educational science along with educational market in Germany since the 70th, that brought about a dramatic change in its concept and academic situation.There is no conclusion but the reminder, that education will keep to be an art, an art though with method.
