Abstract	The author examines the attention which is paid to values and standards in Dutch primary education. In particular he asks if and how primary education is aimed at the orientation of children towards values, important for Dutch society. In part one the author discusses the role and responsibility of the government and the explicit educational objectives for primary schools. In order to comprehend the Dutch education concerning values, a sidestep is made to the School Funding Controversy which is very important indeed for the Dutch society. Second he shows to what extent the constitutionally guaranteed "freedom of education" has influenced the legislation of primary education (Primary Education Act, WBO) at this point and still determines the ongoing discussion of attainment targets for primary education. Furthermore the author examines the individual attainments targets to the extent that they reveal human values and human rights and the European dimension. In part two he gives an account of research into text-books of world studies for primary education, looking for the presence of human rights, a values oriented content, the European dimension and a specific didactic approach to them. In part three the author offers critical comment on the educational developments in connection with values education in Dutch primary education. (DIPF/orig.).
