Abstract | The author writes this as one enters the period of the year dedicated to self-reflection and assessment. It is both gratifying and humbling to read the responses of distinguished colleagues to his article in the "Journal". Their comments serve as stimuli for much reflection and re-thinking as he continues to grapple with the themes addressed in the article. Following the precedent of Joe Reimer in a similar symposium in the "Journal" 5 years ago, the author responds by using this platform as an opportunity to try both to amplify and clarify what he wrote with respect to a few key issues. As a field educators are underinvested in the research, capacity-building, support structures, and leadership and professional development needed to achieve excellence under any paradigm for Jewish education and certainly to make challenging paradigm shifts. In this article, the author aims to identify the conditions under which any Jewish education is likely to be effective in today's social, cultural, and technological environment. In arguing that to be successful today Jewish education must be meaningful and relevant, the author may be echoing a theme characteristic of his generation and connected to a larger liberal worldview.
