AbstractThe American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) has been a constant advocate for greater diversity in community college leadership. Along with other work to encourage diversity in leadership, the AACC brought together community college practitioners and scholars to develop a competency framework for community college leadership, "Competencies for Community College Leaders" (2005). The framework was intended to both guide current leaders and aspiring leaders by naming the sorts of abilities, activities, and beliefs central for community college leaders. It offers a somewhat complete description of community college leadership. In addition, the framework offers a way of assessing current leaders so that beliefs about effectiveness are not tangled with gendered or racial notions of acceptable leadership. This chapter uses a feminist lens to analyze the AACC's "Competencies for Community College Leaders" and concludes that the competencies are largely indifferent to gendered ideologies within leadership.
