Abstract | Students' lack of understanding about the relationships between geometry in two and three dimensions led the author to a surprising source of inspiration--the ancient philosopher and geometer Plato. From a theoretical perspective, the author's approach embodies the four instructional strategies that Eggen and Kauchak (2001) suggest for engaging students in exploration of new content: (1) demonstration; (2) discrepant events; (3) visual display; and (4) thought-provoking questions. Just as significant, this approach lays the foundation for thoughtful inquiry into mathematics, prompting observation, comparison between what is already known or understood, questioning, interpretation, discussion, and writing. This article describes a geometric solids unit inspired by Plato's Cave Allegory that uses different forms of three-dimensional objects to give students a clearer understanding of the realities of these objects and to improve their level of questioning and understanding.
