Abstract | Students' use of technology allows them to generate and manipulate multiple representations of a concept, compute numbers with relative ease, and focus more on mathematical concepts and higher-order thinking skills. In elementary school mathematics classrooms, students develop higher-order thinking skills by completing complex tasks that require them to make connections and analyze mathematical concepts, evaluate processes and algorithms, and create representations to support task completion. In this article, the author describes an example of how students deepened their understanding of algebra and their higher-order thinking skills while completing a task on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' (NCTM) Illuminations Web site.
