AbstractThe Edison School of Applied Technology, a comprehensive public high school, has long had a reputation for producing top-notch crafts workers, tradespeople, project managers, estimators, and industry leaders. The school's graduates helped build the city and many currently have successful, productive careers in the public and private sectors. But in recent years, Edison had fallen upon hard times. The school went through changes in administration and philosophies that, over time, resulted in a dwindling enrollment and facilities that were less than cutting edge. Just a few years ago, many of its CTE programs, including construction, were in jeopardy. Then, staffing changes brought in very progressive, supportive administrators and the school entered into highly successful partnerships with various companies, area colleges, and trade unions. Edison's situation has very much turned around. This article describes one of its very successful new projects: building a house on an off-campus lot near the school. The plan was to sell the house to a low-income family, then use the proceeds to start construction on another house. (ERIC).
