AbstractMany physical education teachers experience frustration about student assessment because of issues such as overcrowded classes, scheduling conflicts, extensive record keeping, lack of planning time, or deciding what areas to assess. For these reasons, teachers may base the majority of students' grades simply on participation and behavior. Very often only a limited portion of the student's grade is based on skill achievement and cognitive assessments. This type of grading system does very little to motivate students to learn the concepts physical educators are teaching. This article presents a success story of an elementary physical education teacher who used assessment in the educator's elementary physical education program. The physical educator discovered that assessment can have a positive effect on students' motivation and their desire to acquire knowledge and pursue skill development. As long as educators show meaning and relevance to the assessments given, the students' outcomes of those assessments should tremendously improve. Through practical application of what some of the professional literature suggests, the physical educator now strongly believes that the assessment process plays a very critical role in the success of the students as well as the program.
