Abstract | Funded by the Learning and Skills Council and the European Social Fund, the North East Worcestershire (NEW) Women project, based at the Multi-Resource Centre in Bromsgrove, offers family learning--in its broadest sense--for young mothers. It has in place all the requirements of good practice for providing learning opportunities to young mothers, separately from their children, recognising that the children will also benefit greatly from their mother's learning experience. The learning has a focus on literacy and numeracy, embedded into parenting and other life skills. However, young mothers are encouraged to develop individually, both as young mothers and as young women. The success of the NEW Women project stems from its "holistic" approach to young mothers. The achievements speak for themselves. From a group of 63 young mothers who attend the project twice a week for two-hour sessions, 15 have passed level 1 National Test in Literacy (with seven more due to take the test, at time of writing); five have gained a full OCN award; and 59 have gained OCN units, with seven more on track to do so. NEW Women has proved that, with the right support and strategies in place, young parents can achieve, progress and move on to further education or employment. (ERIC). |
