Abstract | Academics employed on non-standard contracts are a numerically significant part of the labour market in higher education. Concerns about access to formal academic development for this staff group have been articulated in many countries in the context of increasing emphasis on teaching quality assessment and employment regulation of "non-permanent" employees in the labour market. This article presents data from an action research project that examined the experiences of non-permanent "contingent" teachers in a UK business school. In addition to formal academic development, the article considers the informal professional development processes which contingent staff engage in and the extent to which their skills and expertise are fully utilised within their institutions. The article highlights the academic development implications of the marginalisation of contingent academic staff, arguing for their inclusion within relevant and appropriate academic development processes.
