Abstract | As schools move toward including greater numbers of students with special needs in general classroom settings, and as teachers increasingly seek to provide effective accommodations and adaptations, the roles of paraeducators as support personnel will assume greater importance. Nevertheless, while paraeducators are critical to the success of inclusionary practices, their mounting involvement has brought its own set of dilemmas. The employment of paraeducators has occurred with limited research. Therefore, it has become important that issues related to their roles and responsibilities in contemporary classrooms be addressed. This paper examines some of the concerns that are appearing in the special education literature regarding paraeducators in the schools, discusses the notions of support, and examines briefly the ways in which support can be rendered more effective.
