Abstract | In this article, the authors describe the mechanics of They're M-e-e-elting!, an activity wherein middle school students can simulate glacial retreat in Antarctica. They're M-e-e-elting! allows students to melt glaciers, change the water level and salinity of the Southern Ocean, and examine alterations to the Antarctic food web--all without leaving the classroom. This investigation allows students to understand why a change of a few degrees in air temperature could cause glaciers to melt and could cause a global rise in sea level. This activity also allows students to realize how climate change can have important consequences for the entire food webs. (Contains 5 figures and 4 online resources.) (ERIC). |
