Abstract | In this update, Linton describes the Life Skills for State and Local Prisoners Program and discusses why this reentry program has been successful. This program competitively funds three-year demonstration projects that provide life skills instruction in either state correctional facilities or jails. Both state and local correctional systems are eligible and compete together for funding. The grants are demonstration projects, so innovation, evaluation and dissemination are all key themes. Life skills are very broadly defined in the legislation, so project developers have had great leeway in identifying the skills most likely to directly contribute to post release success. These range from literacy and occupational skills to parenting and anger management. (ERIC). |
