Abstract | This article describes the practices the authors use to promote learning mathematics through social interactions that they cultivate in their classrooms throughout the year. The design of their instruction is guided by two productive discourse practices that they have found to be the most powerful. The first practice involved posing open mathematical tasks to launch the lessons (Boaler 2016); the second practice involved exploring diverse ideas about mathematics through various forms of conversation and social interactions. To illustrate these practices, they share examples from two different sixth-grade statistics lessons. Examining written responses and results from small-group and whole-class discussions revealed students' diverse ideas and thinking about the contexts and content. Social interactions and conversations were strategically planned, so that students could share various interpretations of tasks related to data displays and measures of central tendency. (ERIC). |
