| Abstract | In the early morning hours of June 12, 2016, a lone gunman entered the Pulse night club in downtown Orlando, FL and committed a mass shooting which killed 49 people and injured 53. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the city of Orlando opened a temporary Family Assistance Center (FAC). The center was established to provide a one stop venue where a variety of support services could be provided for victims and survivors of the tragedy. During the 8-day period that FAC was operational, governmental agencies and other organizations assisted 956 individuals representing 298 families. The Florida Crisis Response Team (FCRT) was one of a number of organizations providing support for victims and survivors. FCRT consists of more than 800 volunteers representing a variety of occupations, including law enforcement, victim advocates, clergy, and school and community mental health professionals. During the first week following the tragedy, FCRT members delivered death notifications, provided support to first responders, facilitated groups, and attended vigils. This article details one school psychologist's experience serving the Orlando community following the shooting at the Pulse nightclub. (ERIC). |
