Abstract | Nutrition labels are seen as one means of enhancing diets, but there have been no studies of attitudes towards, and use of, such labels by college students in any of the Arab countries. A questionnaire-based survey of students in several of the colleges of Kuwait University was carried out. Data were analysed using t-test, 1-way ANOVA, crosstabs, chi square and directional measures as appropriate. Overall, 20.8% never, 46.2% sometimes, 23.4% mostly and 9.6% always read nutrition labels. When buying first time, 77.3% always or sometimes read labels, as against 44.7% on subsequent purchase. Reasons for not reading labels included time shortage (40.1%), information not understood (34.7%), information not clear (25.2%). Expiry date, date of manufacture, country of manufacture, storage and use instructions, and number of calories were the information most sought. 45.8% thought the information was always, 44.9% sometimes, 9.3% rarely useful. 64.9% felt food labels are very important, 16.3% not important, 18.8% unsure. Older students and those who had completed more university education scored higher in attitudes and usage and those attending Colleges of Science, Engineering and Medicine higher in attitudes than those in Arts. Kuwait University students read food labels and find them useful. How far this translates into healthier eating remains to be determined. There is scope for better design of labels and education in their use. (As Provided). |
