AbstractThe purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to research teachers' attrition in a central South Carolina school district by analyzing the experiences of 5 former teachers in the district. Highly qualified teachers are needed to educate students who come from diverse backgrounds. Unfortunately, many qualified teachers leave the profession seeking opportunities that offer better financial, professional, and personal rewards. The theoretical framework of this study was Herzberg's Two Factor Theory. The research questions addressed factors that influenced former teachers to leave their school district, their concerns about attrition in their former school district, and suggestions to help lower attrition. Data were gathered using structured telephone interviews with 5 former teachers and analyzed to generate codes and themes by comparing information within and across transcripts. All of the participants were female, full-time, certified teachers in general or special education within the last 5 years in a rural, low income district. Some of the factors that influenced teachers to leave their former district were lack of support from administration and colleagues, other career opportunities, and student discipline problems. Teachers described their concerns about attrition by relating expectations that did not match the reality of their classrooms in areas such as workload and testing requirements. Suggestions to lower teacher attrition included increasing support from administration and changing testing requirements. This study has the potential to support positive social change in school districts across the nation by lowering teachers' attrition. The increased experience and development of teachers will contribute to the academic success of students. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
