AbstractThe purpose of this quantitative research study was to identify if there was a relationship between student or administrator characteristics (Independent variables) and the application of various disciplinary actions (Dependent variables). This study examined student's gender, race, grade point average, number of credits, and disciplinary dispositions assigned when students violate school procedures. For the purpose of this study, the dispositions were after-school detention, Saturday school, behavior counseling, in-school suspension, alternative placement, out-of-school suspensions, and expulsion. The findings of this quantitative study were consistent with much of the literature. Punitive disciplinary strategies such as out-of-school suspension increase the likelihood of a student dropping out of school. This study suggests that non-punitive disciplinary actions can work to reduce negative student behavior. However, the number of behavior infractions committed by female students was disturbing. Therefore, recommendations from this study include professional development to address issues of negative female behaviors. Similarly, another unanticipated finding pertains to the issue of violence. According to the study, the likelihood for being referred for committing an infraction of violence increases by 70% with each office referral.
