AbstractThe purpose of this qualitative research study was to examine the basis of the academic resilience shown in those who are labeled as low-income, at-risk students. This study examined the way the home environment and student perceptions of teacher beliefs contribute to the success of at-risk students. Data were drawn from school records, surveys, as well as semistructured interviews. A purposive sampling design was used to select eight participants from an inner city elementary school. Surveys were given to parents to gather demographic and family background data. Semistructured interviews were conducted with both the parents and students individually to understand their home environments and what allowed them to display resilience against adversities. The overall aim of this study was to defy the trend of negative depictions of low income, at-risk students. Parental expectations, discipline, and a sense of independence were indicated as significant factors related to the students' resilience. Additional findings and implications for future research are presented. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
